Thermal vias help dissipate excess PCB heat. Thermal conductivity of copper is an order of magnitude higher than the thermal conductivity of PCB laminate materials. Vias increase the copper available to conduct heat.
Thermal vias are frequently found under hot parts like power MOSFETs, power IGBTs, and voltage regulators.
